Byteonchain News has recently partnered with the climate sustainability project RMTerra (Mother Earth Reforestation), founded by Pedro Marques in 2017, as a direct response to the devastating wildfires that hit Central and Northern Portugal. What started as an individual effort by Pedro has since grown into a powerful collective—one planting trees, restoring life, and replicating the natural environment through syntropic farming.
In an interview with Byteonchain News, Pedro shared the early beginnings of the project. “I started out hosting events on Facebook, connecting with individuals and local associations with an interest in restoring ravaged lands.” From these small gatherings, RM Terra has blossomed into one of the strongest grassroots forces for reforestation in Portugal using the syntropic methodology. The project received global recognition when it earned second place at the New York NFT Awards in 2022, affirming its innovation and impact.
RM Terra’s incorporation of Blockchain Technology
RM Terra works with partners who share its vision. Treedefy, one of the earliest partners, assisted with the tokenization of trees, turning nature into traceable, living data, RMRK, Kodadot, and much more. The Shokunin Network, in collaboration with RM Terra, helped build Data Grow Lab, a tech-powered lab that merges regenerative agriculture with blockchain infrastructure. Volunteers are hosted in Earthship house, eco-constructed living spaces co-developed by some of these partners and RMTerra, especially during planting seasons.
Tricky NFTs also supports the project by offering consultancy on the more technical aspects, helping to scale ideas and infrastructure. One of the standout features of RM Terra is the NFTree—a transparent, verifiable blockchain representation of each tree planted. This is not just tech layered on nature; it is a synergy of both worlds, each strengthening the other.
Syntropic Farming: Healing the Earth by Design
At the heart of RM Terra’s method is Syntropic Farming — a regenerative, layered approach that mimics the intelligence of natural forests. It’s not just about planting trees, but about designing life in vertical and temporal succession. The process begins with fast-growing placenta species that prepare the soil, followed by shrubs and medium-structure trees, and then taller, long-living species that we call ancestral trees.
Each layer — from ground cover to canopy — plays a role, forming a dynamic wave of life that evolves over time and thriving natural ecosystems. The method works with the land, not against it. It doesn’t rely on watering systems. It nurtures soil by adding to it, not by breaking it. Trees, vegetables, aromatics—all planted together in harmony. Syntropic farming mimics nature’s rhythm. That’s why it works. That’s why it lasts.
RM Terra also organizes Syntropic Tours, educating people on sustainable farming and showing how we can collectively care for Mother Earth. It’s not a distant mission but a shared one.
Cross-Chain Nature
The work doesn’t stop in the soil. RM Terra is searching for developers to continue building a PVM–EVM compatible, cross-chain NFT collection inspired by the lives of bees. Each NFT mirrors the inner structure of a real hive departments, functions, roles. Future mints will also include trees and flower collections that interact across chains, distributing airdrops and rewards to community members. This creative, decentralised approach makes every supporter a part of the ecosystem. It goes beyond visibility, it gives nature a voice on-chain.
Beyond the Planting
The team behind RM Terra includes professional forestry consultants, planters, technicians, designers, and community builders. Together, they’re working on regenerating soils, one phase at a time, always respecting natural cycles and understanding that healing takes layers, time, and care.
Their collaborative space, SOL, is another reflection of this ethos. Built in partnership with Parish Council of Vila Cova de Alva Dr Paulo Amaral, on an inactive primary school near the Serra da Estrela mountains, SOL is a coworking and event space for Art, Nature, and Tech.
A Mission Rooted in Love and Restoration
RM Terra sprouted from a vision, from the ruins of fire, it chose to plant, to rebuild and to include. Every tree, every tour, every token—each part of a larger mission: to restore, educate, and connect people with nature through technology and hands-on action. At Byteonchain News, we are truly proud to support and share this journey. Because when forests grow, communities grow. When soil heals, futures heal.
