You Can Now Get Digital IDs for the Republic of Palau on Solana

For $248, Solana users will be able to mint their Republic of Palau digital IDs.

The Pacific island nation of Palau is deepening its collaboration with decentralized identity platform RNS.ID, announcing the launch of digital residency IDs (DIDs) on the Solana blockchain. This initiative marks a milestone, as it’s the first instance of a sovereign nation issuing legal identities on Solana, according to RNS.ID.

Palau’s digital residency program, introduced in 2022, allows individuals to obtain official residency backed by the country, without the need for physical presence. The first Legal DID was issued in September 2023 on Ethereum, with Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin present for the occasion.

Through the RNS.ID platform, users can apply for Palau’s digital residency card for $248, granting them a visa extension of up to 180 days. It also provides a layer of anonymity, allowing users to access cryptocurrency exchanges that might be restricted due to their geographical location.

George Harrap, co-founder of Step Finance, commented on the significance of this move, stating, “It’s exciting to see Palau leverage Solana for their IDs. From the documentary we did on their system, it was clear they were implementing timely ideas with growing traction. I expect this initiative to build on that momentum.”

Since its launch, RNS.ID has issued 7,338 digital residencies, following a vetting process that includes anti-money laundering and identity verification measures. This process typically takes up to 10 days.

The Potential of Decentralized IDs Decentralized identity systems have long been considered one of the most impactful applications of blockchain technology. For example, Microstrategy, known for its Bitcoin accumulation, is working on a decentralized identity system based on blockchain inscriptions. Similarly, the Shiba Inu project has been developing its own digital identity systems.

Worldcoin, a major player in the decentralized ID space, backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has also been active. In February, Worldcoin announced a solution for using its World ID to verify the identities of esports players. This partnership with crypto-powered esports platform Community Gaming aims to ensure “proof of personhood,” using biometric verification through their iris-scanning device called the Orb.

Conclusion As more countries and organizations explore blockchain-based decentralized identity solutions, Palau’s partnership with RNS.ID and Solana stands out as a pioneering step. With its transparent and secure identity verification process, Palau is setting an example for digital sovereignty in the blockchain age.
